Bus Stop Safety – Protect Our Kids!

10696205_840296952654608_4422420384584417186_nClose calls at Pinebrook bus stops keep occurring. A student was nearly hit at Pinebrook Road and Big Spruce on 9/23/15. HOA board members have been coordinating with the PCSD transportation department to address safety concerns.

The nature of our steep narrow roads requires more caution to keep our kids safe. When the school bus is stopped with red lights flashing it is illegal to pass the bus, NO MATTER HOW WIDE THE INTERSECTION.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN. PLAN AHEAD.

1) Observe all speed limits and signage – including STOP signs, which are NOT optional.

2) Be aware of bus and student activity, and drive conscientiously, especially in dark early morning hours. If you don’t want to have to wait behind a bus, then avoid bus times by leaving earlier or later – passing a bus is illegal and dangerous. Likewise, watch for children when stopping to pick up mail – the mailboxes are the designated place for students to wait for the bus and pickup. Bus times are listed at the end of this notice.

PARENTS: The PCSD Transportation Department is aware of the complexity of the Big Spruce bus stop, and is actively looking at how to make it safest for our students. Student safety is their primary concern, and they are consulting with the county and state officials to find the safest option for our students.

In the meantime, they are asking that we do the following:

1) Have your students out of the car and waiting at the mailboxes at least 5 minutes before the bus is due to pick them up. The easiest way to do this is when the bus goes up Pinebrook Road to the Canyon Drive stop, please help your student(s) safely cross Big Spruce at the stop sign to wait at the mailboxes. The Transportation Department wants students to line up and wait in the mailbox area as a safety precaution – the building provides a protective barrier for the kids.

2) If you park on the mailbox side of Big Spruce, PLEASE STAY WITHIN THE WHITE LINES so that you are out of the road, for safety’s sake. The students will be crossing in front of your vehicles from the mailboxes to the bus. In the afternoon it is the same, but with the students coming from the bus to the mailboxes. It is imperative that students not be forced into the road to get to the mailboxes. The bus is supposed to have a twelve foot safety cushion from the bus in all directions for the kids’ sakes; please respect this guideline.

Thank you for your cooperation.
