Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District has scheduled a control burn in Toll Canyon Open Space which lies to the west of Pinebrook. Under the direction of the Summit County Fire Warden, slash piles remaining from the 2016 fire mitigation and forest health project will be burned. The burning of these piles is necessary as they present a continual fuel load that needs to be properly mitigated as part of the project guidelines. Burning operations are planned for some time in late January through late February based on the required ideal conditions for snow cover, weather conditions and air quality regulations to ensure safety. Burn piles will leave a temporary visual scar on the landscape. The District is dedicated to minimizing that scar as much as possible in Summer of 2018 by way of re- seeding, raking debris and disbursing ash. Additional signage will be posted while the area is closed. The District is committed to the safety and wellbeing of the public and our public lands. Additional information can be found here. Questions should be directed to Open Space Management Supervisor, Jessica Kirby, 435-649-1564 x26 or email jessica@basinrecreation.org

Summit County Snow Safety Information
It’s been a mild winter so far, but soon (hopefully) the snow storms will arrive. Summit County wants to remind Pinebrook residents of their snow safety regulation and guidelines:
- Summit County plow operators will work from 4:00 am – 10:00 pm, unless a storm rolls in overnight and continues throughout the day.
- KEEP YOUR SNOW ON YOUR PROPERTY – NOT IN THE STREET. Snow storage – property owners must contain ALL of the snow from their property, including their driveway, onto their own property (Summit County Code 7-3-4 & 7-3-5). They may not push their snow out onto the County Road or into the County Right-of-Way. Doing so creates hazards to plow operators and other drivers.
- YOUR MAILBOX IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. All landscaping, mail boxes, markers and other items placed in the County Right-of-Way are at RISK. Damage to these items will not be the responsibility of the County (Summit County Code 7-3-10). Crews do everything they can to miss/avoid hitting these items, but they cannot see what’s under the snow, and as heavy/wet snow rolls out the end of the plow blade, there is a lot of force that easily knocks things over (like mailboxes). Any damage that may be caused to County snow removal equipment may become the responsibility of the property owner.
- DON’T PARK IN THE STREET. No on-street parking on County Roads (except as otherwise marked by the County) between November 15th and April 15th. Vehicles or other obstacles which hamper County snow removal operations will be towed or removed at the owner’s expense. The County shall not assume any liability for damage to vehicles parked on the street, or other obstacles placed in the County right-of-way in violation of this chapter. Damage to snow removal equipment resulting from contact with vehicles which are illegally parked or other obstacles placed in the County right-of-way shall be the responsibility of the vehicle owner or persons responsible for the obstacles placed in the County right-of-way. (Summit County Code 7-3-3)
- GARBAGE/RECYCLING DAYS – If weather delays trash or recycling pickup, they will be serviced the next day, if possible. Please pull your cans off of the road so plows can keep clearing snow. Severe weather delays can cause a cascade of delays to areas that are supposed to be served on subsequent days.
- GENERAL SAFETY:
– When walking or riding watch for plows. Plow drivers may not see you.
– Do not run into the street to flag down a plow. This may surprise the operator and cause an accident.
– Do not build snow forts in the big snow berms along the road. A plow could come along at any time and push into the piles. For the full county document, click here. If you have questions, you can reach the county at (435) 336-3970

Toll Canyon Forest Thinning
Basin Recreation’s Trails and Open Space is working with the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) to mitigate the risk and hazard of wildfire on Toll Canyon and Summit Park Open Space properties. The project, which is planned to begin September 13, 2017 will treat an 80-ft corridor of forested open space along the dirt jeep road route (known as the Hoof-it Trail) between Summit Park and Toll Canyon, then continue up the ridge (along the Over Easy Trail to Summit Slam). The FFSL Hot Shot Fire Crews will work throughout the month of September and October, clearing brush and hazardous trees.
This project will create a continuous break from Pinebrook to Summit Park by connecting the fuel reduction zone created in summer 2017 within lower Toll Canyon and previous control areas created in 2006-07. The “Firewise” buffer created by this project will also serve to reduce the volume of surrounding forest vegetation (fuels) that present a hazard to nearby homeowners, while providing a safe route for emergency personnel to attack fire in the case of a catastrophic event. FFLS crews will also remove beetle killed trees and thin dense growing conifers to improve forest health and enhance wildlife habitat in the area. A chipper will be utilized to dispose of the debris and redistribute the residue on the forest floor for recycling. Firewood rounds will be stacked on the road for a community collection, scheduled for later fall.
In the interest of public safely, users of Hoof-it in Toll Canyon and Over Easy to Summit Slam in Summit are advised to avoid the area when crews are actively working. Crew, when working will be in the area from 6am-6pm Monday through Friday. The project is projected to be completed in spring 2018.
Those interested in firewood collection should click HERE to be place on the request list.

Pinebrook Pool & Recreation Center
Wouldn’t it be great to have our own neighborhood pool & recreation center, right at the bottom of Pinebrook Road?

Click to enlarge. Conceptual rendering of pool and clubhouse. The final design may differ based on budget. Several years ago, plans were created for a private equity membership pool & recreation center in Pinebrook. Then the economy crashed, the project was put on hold. Now there is a growing group of residents who would like to see this pool & rec center constructed. Are you interested as well?
If so, go to the pool intiative website, check out all the information (there are multiple tabs with a lot of information to answer your questions) and see what you think. If you’re a member of the Pinebrook Master Association and you’d like to participate in this opportunity, join our list of interested parties by sending an email to pool4pinebrook@gmail.com.
Short & Sweet Summary:
Membership will require a one-time equity contribution (most likely $5000 as originally stated in the brochure, but is still to be finalized) as well as a monthly (possibly annual) maintenance assessment for those who wish to join.
If you’re interested in putting in a $250 deposit to reserve your opportunity to join, NOW is the time to do it! Checks should be made to Pinebrook Recreation Center (PRC L.C.) and can be sent to or dropped off at 7950 Pinebrook Rd (the Gorgoza Mutual Water Company’s offices). Since we now have a builder committed to the project, we need to be getting funding together to demonstrate our commitment – so if you want to be in on this, send in a deposit TODAY!
PLEASE NOTE: There is NO obligation for Pinebrook homeowners to join this private venture. As stated in the brochure, “…the facilities will be constructed, operated, and insured by the Pinebrook Recreation Center, LC (PRC), a nonprofit association with no assessment, expense, or liability to the Master Association members who choose not to join.” It was designed as an equity membership for those who want to contribute & participate. If you do not wish to participate, since this will be a private venture, your HOA fees will not be affected. -

Mountain lion activity

Photo: Heidi Hewitt A cougar recently visited a Pinebrook home on Tall Oaks Drive. The cat departed peacefully. However, the day after, one dog was killed and another injured in Summit Park. DWR shot and killed the cat. There is no way to know if the cat was the same one seen in Pinebrook. Residents should be aware that wildlife is constantly present in our mountain home. As was the case in Summit Park, pets that are allowed to roam off leash present an easy meal for predators. Parents, pet owners and hikers should always take precautions (recreate in groups, not solo) and be on the alert for wildlife.

Bus Stop Safety – Protect Our Kids!
Close calls at Pinebrook bus stops keep occurring. A student was nearly hit at Pinebrook Road and Big Spruce on 9/23/15. HOA board members have been coordinating with the PCSD transportation department to address safety concerns. The nature of our steep narrow roads requires more caution to keep our kids safe. When the school bus is stopped with red lights flashing it is illegal to pass the bus, NO MATTER HOW WIDE THE INTERSECTION.
PLEASE SLOW DOWN. PLAN AHEAD.
1) Observe all speed limits and signage – including STOP signs, which are NOT optional.
2) Be aware of bus and student activity, and drive conscientiously, especially in dark early morning hours. If you don’t want to have to wait behind a bus, then avoid bus times by leaving earlier or later – passing a bus is illegal and dangerous. Likewise, watch for children when stopping to pick up mail – the mailboxes are the designated place for students to wait for the bus and pickup. Bus times are listed at the end of this notice.
PARENTS: The PCSD Transportation Department is aware of the complexity of the Big Spruce bus stop, and is actively looking at how to make it safest for our students. Student safety is their primary concern, and they are consulting with the county and state officials to find the safest option for our students.
In the meantime, they are asking that we do the following:
1) Have your students out of the car and waiting at the mailboxes at least 5 minutes before the bus is due to pick them up. The easiest way to do this is when the bus goes up Pinebrook Road to the Canyon Drive stop, please help your student(s) safely cross Big Spruce at the stop sign to wait at the mailboxes. The Transportation Department wants students to line up and wait in the mailbox area as a safety precaution – the building provides a protective barrier for the kids.
2) If you park on the mailbox side of Big Spruce, PLEASE STAY WITHIN THE WHITE LINES so that you are out of the road, for safety’s sake. The students will be crossing in front of your vehicles from the mailboxes to the bus. In the afternoon it is the same, but with the students coming from the bus to the mailboxes. It is imperative that students not be forced into the road to get to the mailboxes. The bus is supposed to have a twelve foot safety cushion from the bus in all directions for the kids’ sakes; please respect this guideline.
Thank you for your cooperation.
